Raise your hand if you need some help.

We aren’t designed to do it alone.

Change doesn’t come easily for everyone. Some people embrace it and think it’s exciting, while others freeze up, feeling unable to function. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, know that it’s completely normal. Our bodies are designed to experience stress when change happens—and they are equally designed to seek homeostasis, a state of calm.

If you’re reading this, I imagine you might be looking for some support in returning to that state of calm.

Having someone to talk to is essential for everyone. Humans are a social species. We need connection, to feel heard and supported, and to know we’re not alone in this world. Talking through our thoughts helps us make sense of them. We aren’t meant to navigate life entirely on our own.

People who handle change and stressful life events well often have trusted individuals they can confide in—people who help them process challenges. But what about those who don’t feel like they have that kind of support? Unfortunately, they are often the ones who need it most. Therapy provides an incredible space for that.

I first learned this lesson in high school during a leadership program. We participated in an exercise where we were blindfolded, instructed to hold onto a rope, and told to find the end. The instructor kept repeating, “Raise your hand if you need help.” Turns out, asking for help is harder than it seems.

I remember trying and trying, telling myself, “I’m smart. I’ve got this.” Until I didn’t. Fear crept in. I became nervous, scared, and caught in a cycle of self-doubt.

Then I asked for help. And just like that, I was released from the challenge—I had conquered it!

That activity comes up often in my head.  I constantly remind myself that other people are a wealth of knowledge, support, kindness, and connection. I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received over the years.

We aren’t meant to do this alone. Reach out if you need support.
